Electrician » Working Hours
The working conditions in the UK for an electrician are generally very good. You have to put in about 37 to 40 hours a week Monday to Friday. The money is good and you generally work indoors regardless of whether you are on a commercial or residential premise.
There is a lot of opportunity to work overtime too specially at the weekend or late evenings. Depending on the team you work in you will be working a shift system or you may be on call if for example your organization provide 24 hour support to its clients.
The job also may involve some travel and you may have to spend 1 or 2 nights away from home working on building projects. If this is the case your company or contractor should provide you with a stipend and accommodation. This is not always the case though as those costs may be worked into your payment schedule especially if you are self employed.
Generally speaking your work environment is safe however sometimes you may have to work in hazardous locations for example working at heights. This could involve either ladders or scaffolds. There is always a risk factor given that you are working with switches, wires and electronic appliances
The health and safety course you will be do as part of your qualification will teach you how to work in these conditions.
Finally you need to have a decent level of fitness as being an electrician can be physically demanding.
