From January 2011, to qualify as an electrician you need to achieve one of the new Level 3 MVQ Diplomas from City and Guilds or EAL. You could start with a series of knowledge units and it is possible to complete them at your work place.

Your starting point would depend on the result of your assessment once CourseHut puts you in touch with a training provider they will be able to recommend a course on which to get started.

We recommend some GCSE’s if they are in Math’s and Science that would be more beneficial. This is because you will need to read and interpret blueprints for building plans for example.

It is not uncommon for some companies to provide aptitude tests for certain job applicants but this is generally to check whether you have a base level of skills. The majority of people do so don’t worry too much.

The starting point for a career as an electrician is City & Guilds Electrical Installation Course Part 1.

You do not have to be a qualified electrician to carry out PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing). However, you would need to be considered a competent person. This is normally demonstrated by qualifications and/or relevant experience.

Some providers offer extra training if you need it for example the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations Course. Once CourseHut have selected a training company for you, they can assess your skills and advise on any further qualifications or training.
