Electrician » Salary Expectations

As an electrician you can expect a starting salary of up to £20k per year. This usually does not include over time that you may be called upon to do. That could increase your earnings significantly if you tend to work more weekends or late evenings. Some electricians prefer unconventional hours so overtime can be a very enticing opportunity.

Depending on your experience and as you work the career ladder your salary could rise to between £24k to £28k. Experienced electricians with specialist grading can earn over £30k per year.

Being a self employed electrician can increase your earnings significantly. Do remember though that certain risks come with being self employed. You do not have a set monthly income; you need to have a regular stream of business. There are other costs too of managing a business. With a lot of hard work though it can be a very rewarding experience with plenty of financial benefits.

Hourly rates are in an electrician’s favor. Average hourly rates vary depending on the nature of work and any over time that you incur. Your charge out rates could be anywhere between £50 to £80 per hour depending on your location. For example rates in London tend to be higher than anywhere else in the UK.
