MSPs await work training response

Education Secretary Michael Russell is to respond to a report on vocational education and training for over-16s.

The report, published in August, suggested ways to improve education and training in the workplace, and was produced as the result of a review by chairman of Skills Development Scotland Willy Roe on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The review argued that the post-16 education and vocational training arrangements should be strengthened and better integrated with other parts of the education and employment systems.

It considered ways to achieve better value for money, and support for the unemployed and young people seeking work for the first time.

At the time of its publication, skills minister Alasdair Allan said: "It is vitally important that we do everything we can to support our young people to develop the skills and knowledge they need for the workplace.

"Willy Roe's report contains a number of suggestions to put the learner at the centre of the journey and improve the education and training that we offer young people once they have left school."

Mr Russell is also expected to touch on the Government's Opportunities For All initiative - a commitment that every 16 to 19-year-old will be offered a learning or training place if they are not already in a job, modern apprenticeship or education.
